Kwon Semo (Hangul: 권세모), also known as Dylan in English dub, is one of the main characters in Tobot: Daedo's Heroes and the original Tobot series. He is Limo's adoptive son and the co-pilot of Tobot Z (along with Han since Daedo's Heroes).
At the beginning of the series, Dylan was prickly and asocial, most likely from his father's recent arrest and a new, unfamiliar environment. As time progresses, Dylan opens up more and develops connections and friendships, although he remains blunt and quiet.
Dylan's biological parents are unknown. He was in a car accident when he was younger, which gave him two robotic prosthetics.
Appearance[]
In early seasons, Dylan wears a hoodie. The torso is a shade of maroon, with white sleeves that have a red stripe running down them. The area around his collar is coloured white. He also wears blue pants and dark red and white sneakers. His smart key is a watch that he wears on his left wrist.
In later seasons, Dylan wears a white hoodie with one large dark red stripe around the torso that dips into a v-shape, with blue jeans and white, blue, and green shoes.
In Heroes of Daedo City, he wears black shirt with a 'Z' splashed in the center, a collared red jacket with white buttons, grey jeans, and white sneakers with red accents. Later, in order to carry around his new prosthetic hand, he has a white pouch strapped to his right arm with a red triangle.
Dylan has violet eyes, a trait unique to his character until the appearance of Ra Daeun. He also has thicker eyebrows than the other characters. His hair is dark brown and somewhat messy. Compared the Char twins, his skin is a shade darker. Dylan's features have been described as "good-looking" by Dolly. He also wears a pair of blue and white headphones with blue stars around his neck on occasion, with less and less headphone appearances as the series progresses. Similarly, in Heroes of Daedo City, the headphones make irregular appearances on his neck; sometimes he wears them, sometimes he doesn't.
Dylan's left leg and left arm are prosthetic; they do not grow along with him, and must be replaced and adjusted as he grows. In Heroes of Daedo City, his left hand is smaller and paler because of this, and although Limo originally meant to give him a realistic replacement, Dylan requested that it be replaced by a stronger, combat-oriented version to make up for Z's incapacitated state. This new hand is white and black with red accents. Even after Z is repaired, Dylan continues to use the combat hand. He uses it when in combat or rescue for self defense and better rescue capabilities, which is usually strapped to his right tricep to be switched in. When living everyday life, he uses a realistic version.
Personality[]
Dylan was very distant and antisocial during his first appearances, often preferring to be by himself. Though he hid it, he sometimes struggled with indecision and could be manipulated easily. He was jealous of the Char brothers, their Tobots, and their easy life. Dylan was also brainwashed by Diluk Octavius and primarily Acnee during the first half of the first season to believe that Franklin Char was one of the driving reasons his father was incarcerated. This led to an internal indecision and conflict, but in the end it required stumbling upon Diluk's hoaxing operation for Dylan to finally understand the truth.
Dylan mellows out after the events of mid-Season 1, and is more open and willing to take parts of conversations. He is more decisive, and some of his cheek and biting comments are replaced with light teasing and sarcasm. Dylan is still not as talkative as, say, Kory Char, but it is a large difference to his loner attitude from earlier Season 1. He is still relatively shy and quiet.
Dylan is relatively quicker to anger than other characters in Tobot. Dylan's anger is cumulative, and he releases it in different forms of yelling, arguing, and distancing. Otherwise, he stays level-headed and composed under pressure. He is quick to defend his father in any situation where somebody may be insulting or accusing him.
Dylan has little experience with kids his age or under his age. He is never seen interacting with any people in school other than Dolly, Ryan, and Kory. When Han came to live at his home, Dylan didn't know what to do or entertain him with, so he spun off his prosthetic hand and showed it to Han, which freaked him out.
In Heroes of Daedo City, Dylan is shown to always be the first to jump to action when human combat occurs, or a civilian is in danger. Some examples include his skirmish with Valerie in a parking lot, him punching a sign that was falling on a trajectory towards a civilian, and chasing down a certain android before grabbing onto their ankle. This may be because he is the one most apt for hand-to-hand combat, and because when the Tobots are occupied, Dylan is the physically strongest member available.
Relationships[]
Limo[]
Limo is Dylan's adoptive father; he was also the person driving the car that hit Dylan. Limo adopted Dylan after finding out he was an orphan.[1] Limo is always concerned for Dylan's health and safety,[2] and loves Dylan so much that Limo's fatherly love for Dylan managed to manifest in Tobot Zero and Tobot Z themselves.
Dylan is always protective of Limo and considers Limo his real father. He was willing to go through a villain base to rescue Limo, and in Season 1, caused much harm trying to clear his father's name. Although Dylan does not show outward, physical affection frequently for his father, he is seen hugging Limo on several different occasions, and communicates his love through verbal language and various acts to rescue or defend Limo.
Tobot Z[]
Unlike X, Y, or the other Tobots, Z's mind core was not incubated by Dylan himself. Nonetheless, their bond is one of the strongest among Tobot-Pilot relationships.
Upon Dylan's discovery of Z, Z was shown to have immediate loyalty to Dylan and seemed familiar with him even though Z had never met Dylan, even calling himself "a robot made just for Dylan" and "Dylan's very own Tobot".[3] This was a side effect of Limo incubating Z; Limo's fatherly love was so tremendous it translated into Z. Therefore, Z was incubated to always know and love Dylan. This shows in how protective Z is of Dylan, and his longing for Dylan's recognition and praise.[4] Z's chemistry with Dylan is unique among even Tobots. He understands and sympathizes with Dylan on an emotional level that is unseen in other Tobots.
Dylan considers Z one of his best friends and his partner in combat. He is worried when Z is injured or when Z pushes himself too hard. Although sometimes it may seem like Z's love is one-sided, Dylan cares for Z very deeply. He was upset by the idea of Z being incinerated by Tom Fuse, and began to panic upon this becoming a near-reality.
It is to be noted that in the first episode of Heroes of Daedo City, Z yelled at the fleeing villains that Dylan and Daedo City were protected by him. In that situation, Z was helpless to watch as a wind turbine almost crushed Semo. Based on this evidence and his dislike of Dylan's combat hand, Z most likely felt that Dylan's safety is threatened by villains and Z's own incompetence. The idea of Dylan becoming independent, putting himself in danger, and rendering Z obsolete was something new, unfamiliar, and scary to Z, which furthered the strain on their relationship during that time.
When Z was injured in Tobot: Daedo's Heroes, Dylan forbid him from engaging in combat, transforming, or doing any activity that could result in exertion. Although Z thought this was because Dylan was being cruel or was cutting their bond, Dylan was actually enforcing these rules out of fear that Z would injure himself further. Dylan was terrified by the idea that he would lose Z, and refused to accept any method to repair Z that might make parts of Z disappear. To Dylan, all parts of Z are unique and special and precious. There was no such part of Z that Dylan would accept losing. Dylan had nightmares about losing Z. When Han tried to transform Z and damaged his Mind Core, Dylan used his hands to try and compress Z's Mind Core in vain, while repeatedly yelling "No!" and "This can't be happening!". After they had ensured Z's safety, Dylan yelled at both Han and Z, moreso the latter.
In the end, when everything was resolved, Dylan worked on himself and apologized to Z and Han for being angry with them. He confessed it was out of paralyzing fear of losing Z, and admitted he had gone too far in the name of Z's safety. Their bond was repaired.
Ryan[]
Ryan and Dylan are good friends, bonded by their intelligence and their contrast with Kory. Because of this, they are usually seen paired together in official media and scenes, such as assembling puzzles or model kits together. Both of them are usually there to clean up Kory's messes. On occasion, they argue or have conflict due to their similar personalities. Ryan's ability to argue rational points and Dylan's defensiveness creates sparks. Their fights tend to be resolved easily, however, with Hana usually apologizing and Dylan forgiving.
At first, Ryan suspected (along with Kory) that Dylan was a spy. However, unlike Kory, he took a more non-confrontational approach with Dylan, insisting that Dylan was wrong and that he was being manipulated by Diluk Octavius. Dylan eventually came to his senses and apologized, and so did Ryan. This happened again when Limo was arrested by the police as a result of Angela's scheming, and Dylan went to clear his name. This time, Ryan would apologize first.
Ryan and Dylan's chemistry is good, but not stellar, as seen in the Mission Trip special when they were paired together. Dylan eventually got Ryan to get his head out of the clouds and look at problems with more common sense, rather than with mathematics. Dylan trusted Ryan and believed in his intelligence, the perfect one to lead them to an easy win.
Kory[]
During the beginning, they disliked each other because Kory thought Dylan was a spy, and Dylan thought Kory was annoying and was getting in his way of proving his father innocent. However, in the end they resolved it and they later become friends. Kory and Dylan frequently play soccer together with Ryan. Although not as close as Ryan and Dylan, they still have each other's backs. On occasion, Dylan seems slightly annoyed by Kory's antics. When they have conflict, Kory is always rash and is very confrontational with Dylan, although Kory learned his lesson after the Mother's Lullaby saga and seemed to calm down about attacking Dylan.
Nathan[]
Like most of Dylan's other friendships, Nathan and Dylan weren't on good terms at first, even though Dylan's interactions with Nathan were minimal and non-confrontational. Over time, they bonded, and now they're teammates with excellent chemistry and teamwork. When Tobot Y and Tobot X were captured by Acnee, they relied on each other heavily, gaining a feel for the other's battle sense and working together to create combo moves and hold the fort down. Nathan and Dylan usually end up fighting on the same side in inner conflicts (see the Mother's Lullaby saga).
Dylan cares not only for Nathan, but also for Nathan's younger brother, Timmy, showing worry when Timmy was kidnapped and helping to retrieve him. During the Tobot W arc, Dylan showed support for Nathan as W's Pilot and believed he had what it took to become one.
When Nathan is hurt or in urgent distress, Dylan is usually the first to his side to offer support and walk him through it, as seen when Nathan crashed into a pile of tires and when he suffered from motion sickness during W and Z's combo move, Ice Gatling. On the other hand, Nathan talks up Dylan's abilities and believes that he is capable, as seen when he encouraged Dylan to try and pull off a slam dunk. Nathan is almost motherly to Dylan in the hospital, offering advice and apologizing. Nathan shares a common trait with the other characters in Season 3, in which he tries to demonstrate what he believes is the truth in order to protect Dylan. Although he initially sided with Ryan, he eventually apologized and rebonded with Dylan.
Dolly[]
Dylan and Dolly are classmates. Dolly often compliments Dylan as handsome, which usually surprises him. Dolly was the one who proactively helped Dylan find Limo after he was detained by Angela. Dylan was the first to come to the rescue when Dolly called for help, such as when Dolly tried to save Norman from an octopus robot. Dolly has a one-sided crush on Dylan, who does not seem to have anything beyond platonic affection for her, although their status remains ambiguous. However, he has been shown to be jealous when Dolly has crushes on other people. Notable examples include Tom Fuse and Neon.
When Dolly first met Dylan, she called him good-looking, unlike the Char twins. On occasion, Dylan seems to be bothered by Dolly and her antics. These incidents, however, are spread far and wide. Dylan is usually defensive of Dolly and her motives, especially against Kory, who seems to dislike her. He wishes for Dolly's safety, as shown when Z told W that Dylan ordered him to "not drop Dolly".
Dylan seems primarily uncomfortable with Dolly's... [WIP]
Han[]
At first, Dylan didn't like Han because he was regularly close to Z when his Mind-Core was damaged, and brought him to drive in that state. Later when Han had to stay at his home, he tries to be an older brother figure to him. The two resolved most of their problems, and repair Z's Mind-Core together. Han also becomes Z’s co-pilot due to his relationship with Z.
Etymology[]
The surname "Kwon" has roots dating back to the Goryeo dynasty. There is only one available Chinese character used to spell it, which is "權", meaning "authority". While common, it retains a uniqueness due to its history with the aristocrats of the Goryeo dynasty.[5]
As Dylan was adopted, it is unknown if "Kwon" is his real surname, or if he took his father's last name instead.
Dylan's Korean name, "Semo", shares a motif with Hana, Duri, Neong, and Ogong in that it contains a number. Dylan's number is "three", as he is the third protagonist to make an appearance. "Semo" literally translates into "triangle", a shape with three vertices and three sides. The letter of his Tobot, "Z", also has three lines. Both triangles and the letter Z are frequently implemented into Dylan's design.
Semo is a gender-neutral name used across many different countries. In Korean, it can be used to signify the last day of the year.[6]
